Apple just shipped its full lineup of "27" operating systems, headlined by a completely rebuilt Siri AI and a wave of Apple Intelligence features across every app. Days later, the first foldable iPhone — iPhone Duo — opens for pre-order. Here's what changed, what's worth updating for, and what to know before Duo pre-orders open.
The headline act across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 "Golden Gate" is Siri AI — a rebuilt, conversational assistant with its own dedicated app, personal context awareness, and the ability to take real actions inside apps like Messages, Mail, and Reminders. It launches as an English-only beta, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish arriving in October; it also remains unavailable on iPhone and iPad in the EU for now due to ongoing regulatory discussions, though Mac users there do get access.
Beyond Siri, Apple refined its Liquid Glass design language with better contrast and sharper icons, and leaned further into Apple Intelligence across Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, and parental controls. Notably, macOS 27 Golden Gate is Apple Silicon only — this release drops support for Intel Macs and Rosetta 2 translation entirely.
Conversational, context-aware assistant with a dedicated app, world knowledge, and cross-app actions.
Spatial Reframing, an Extend tool to expand shots, and a stronger Clean Up for removing larger objects.
Automatic topic-based tab grouping, Notify Me page-change alerts, and AI-built extensions.
Ask to Browse, curated app access by age, and default gore/violence blurring in Messages for under-18s.
More uniform refraction, better contrast, sharper icons, and a new transparency slider on Mac.
Support for 5K ultrawide displays at 120Hz, richer VoiceOver descriptions, and auto-generated video captions. Intel Macs are no longer supported.
Feature availability varies by device, region, and language. Some Apple Intelligence features carry daily usage limits. Source: Apple Newsroom and MacRumors, September 2026.
iPhone Duo starts at 256GB storage, is eSIM-only, and uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID. Details based on Apple's official product page, September 2026.
For most Mac, iPhone, and iPad users, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 Golden Gate are worth installing — the Siri AI features roll out gradually, so there's no rush, but the Safari, Photos, and Liquid Glass refinements are worthwhile from day one. The one exception: if you're still on an Intel Mac, macOS 27 isn't available to you at all — talk to us about your options before your current macOS version stops getting security updates.
As for iPhone Duo, it's a first-generation foldable — impressive engineering, but a new category with real trade-offs (no Face ID, eSIM-only, a learning curve on Split View).
